"Who Taught You to Hate Yourself?" Confronting Internalized Oppression

“Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair? What taught you to hate the color of your skin? To such an extent you bleach, to get like the white man? Who taught you to hate your own kind?” -Malcolm X, 1962

One of the consequences of living in racist, white supremacist societies, is that marginalized individuals and communities come to believe (or internalize) the negative, harmful ideas and stereotypes that justify the discrimination and abuse they experience on a daily basis. Revolutionary activists and thinkers, such as Malcolm X challenge us to think about how internalized oppression damages our minds, bodies and spirits.

Muslim Wellness Foundation + Muslim Counterpublics Lab invites you to join them on this webinar addressing the roots and psychological impact of internalized oppression, colonial mentality and racial trauma. Through facilitated discussions and interactive activities, attendees will gain the tools to begin to reclaim their narratives and foster a positive self-identity.
