As Muslim communities navigate a landscape of persistent misconceptions, we know intimately the power of resistance through love. We refuse to let anyone dictate what Islam prescribes, or how we as Muslims should relate to our faith or each other. The event will include food, activities, a raffle, and most importantly, connection. Allies welcome too!

Vigil for Ayşenur
Join For Ayşenur on Monday, December 16 at 5:30pm at Lafayette Square in front of the White House for a candlelight vigil to honor the memory of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi. Ayşenur was murdered by an Isr*eli sniper while protesting in Beita, Palestine on September 6, 2024. Her killing reflects the violence of Zionism, and its threat to the broader fight for justice and liberation for Palestinians and oppressed people everywhere.
Ayşenur’s story is part of a larger struggle against systemic violence, fueled by the Israeli occupation and U.S. weaponry. As we mark 100 days since her murder, we echo her family’s calls for an independent investigation into her killing by the White House, Justice Department, and State Department, and demand an end to Israeli impunity.
We will be joined by members of Ayşenur’s family, congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and local organizers as we honor Ayşenur’s legacy.
Please wear purple, the color Ayşenur was wearing when she was killed, and stand with us in the fight for justice and liberation for all.
Afterwards, there will be a Post-Vigil Community Gathering beginning at 7:15pm in the Edward Bunn Intercultural Center (ICC), Suite #241 on Georgetown University’s Main Campus.

Guantanamo: Injustice, Impunity, & the Fight for Accountability
The use of Guantánamo Bay prison to house Muslim men detained under the guise of the War on Terror, has long been one of the most emblematic examples of institutionalized Islamophobia post 9/11. From torture to indefinite detention, Guantánamo has set the precedent for the treatment of Muslims post 9/11. Since the prison open to house War on Terror prisoners on January 11th, 2002, the population of men incarcerated has gone from 780 to 30. However, the injustice of these prison walls has continued to haunt those currently incarcerated and those who have been transferred out. Join the Guantánamo Survivors Fund and Muslim Counterpublics Lab for a conversation between Alka Pradhan and Dr. Maha Hilal on the current context of Guantanamo, what has transpired in the last 4 years of the Biden administration, what changes we can expect under Trump, and how we can continue to call for the closure of the prison, an end to torture, and accountability for all the men detained in this U.S. Naval Base in Cuba.

Manifestations of the US' Carceral State: From Death Row to Guantanamo Bay & The War on Terror
Join Muslim Counterpublics Lab for their upcoming cafe, Manifestations of the US' Carceral State: From Death Row to Guantanamo Bay & The War on Terror. This event will be taking place at 6:30pm EST on Friday, October 11th, commemorating World Day Against the Death Penalty.
Each year, October 10th marks the World Day Against the Death Penalty. While calls for prison abolition have been making waves, incarceration in the United States has continued at an alarming pace. This face makes our demands for abolition of the death penalty and the carceral state more broadly, increasingly urgent.
The panel will feature firsthand perspectives and an inside look on what it means to abolish the carceral state from those directly impacted by the system. Panelists include: Lyle May, an abolitionist journalist who is incarcerated on death row in North Carolina; Mansoor Adayfi, a writer and advocate who spent more than a decade behind bars at the US' infamous Guantanamo Bay prison; Keith Lamar, who is also incarcerated on death row, the Founder of Native Sons Literacy Project, and the author of Condemned; and Nadrat Siddiqui, an advocate for Aafia Siddiqui, whose case is among the most infamous and tragic in the War on Terror.
